Getting there:
Macon is 190 miles north Of Tallahassee, 84 miles southeast
of Atlanta, on Interstate 75. The 1842 Inn is at 353 College
St. To get there, take exit 52 (Hardeman Avenue) two traffic
lights to College Street and turn left.
Lodging:
The 1842 Inn, mid-Georgias only four--diamond inn, has
19 guest rooms in the antebellum mansion and carriage house.
Rates per evening range from $165 for single occupancy to
$255 for double occupancy. Amenities include continental breakfast
at location of choice, morning newspaper, evening hors d
oeuvres, overnight shoeshine, secure off-street parking and
access to nearly private dining and health clubs. Full breakfast

Weather:
Like Tallahassee, hot in the summer and beautiful in spring
and fall. Winters are mild with an occasional freeze.
Attractions:
Georgia Music Hall of Fame brings 'Tune Town" Macon alive
with concert videos, listening stations, memorabilia and a
childrens wing with interactive exhibits. Georgia Sports
Hall of Fame is filled with rare sports photos, live-action
footage and exhibits of the Peach State's great athletes.
Hay House, The Palace of the South, is an Italian
Renaissance Revival mansion considered one of the finest examples
of antebellum design with lavish stained-glass windows, trompe
l'oeil finishes, gold leafing and grained woodwork. Sidney
Lanier Cottage houses memorabilia, period furnishings and
a museum shop dedicated to the poet of the South
best known for such pieces as "Marshes of Glynn"
and Song of the Chattahoochee." Tubman African
American Museum features a fantastic mural, Africa to
America," painted by local artist Wilfred Stroud along
with a permanent collection of artifacts and art. Ocmulgee
National Monument interprets the culture of prehistoric Southern
Native Americans at a site much like Tallahassees Lake
Jackson Mounds.
Events:
The annual Mid--March Cherry Blossom Festival features 236,000
blooming Yoshino cherry trees. Sweet Georgia Jam, scheduled
for Sept. 16-17, puts the spotlight on free family fun at
the Georgia Music Hall of Fame with Jammin in the Street
and Brown Bag Boogie. The Ocmulgee Indian Celebration, the
second week in September, brings together Native American
dancers and craftspeople at the national monument.
